introducing sonia

My name  is Sonia Khanijow and I am from Carlsbad, CA.  I was born and raised in Carlsbad my entire life, but my parents moved from Singapore in 1979.  I attended La Costa Meadows Elementary and my middle school started at Digueno and ended at Oak Crest.  I went to high school at La Costa Canyon and graduated in 2000.  I went on the UC Riverside and did the 5 year plan, graduating in 2005 with a B.A. in Sociology.  After graduating I decided I wanted to pursue a career in medicine and took classes for the next year a half meeting prerequisites.  I was accepted to a medical university in the Dominican Republic last May and went down there for 3 days.  I decided prior to the orientation process this was not the career path I wanted so chose the direction of teaching instead.  I started the Multiple Credential program the fall of this year and am much happier with the decision I decided to make.
I am much more of a PC person and have struggled using a Mac.  I depend on technology mostly for checking my e-mail and searching for common webpages (ordering books, banking, etc.)  I have never really been computer savvy and try to avoid the computer if at all possible.  Currently I am using the Office 07 version for PC.
The part of the mission statement that says "our practices demonstrate a commitment to student-centered education, diversity, collaboration, professionalism, and shared governance" I feel is a very strong component in being a teacher because the ultimate goal is to have the student succeed.  I actually didn't know the mission statement when applying for the program, but after reading it I am glad I did choose CSUSM as a school to get my credential.  Their focus is on helping you as a student succeed so that ultimately you can help your students do the same.

I think that part of being a good teacher is having a lot of different experiences to draw from. It sounds like from your travels and from your various areas of studies that you are very well rounded and I think that is going to make you an even better teacher!

I was like you in not knowing the mission statement for the program. With all the choices around the county to get a credential I believe that CSUSM is the best place for that opportunity. This program will infuse your life long journey and help you become a great teacher.

I definitely know what it is like to change your path a few times. I changed my major something crazy like 5 times throughout the last 4 years! I'm glad you have finally found the right path. Good luck! :)
